What is a car insurance broker?

A car insurance broker is an insurance intermediary whom deals with a panel of insurance companies. The word broker is quite commonly used in this context, but in fact it is only registered members of BIBA (British Insurance Brokers’ Association) that are legally allowed to call themselves a car insurance broker. Companies that are not registered with BIBA, must call themselves a “Consultant” or “Services”.

BIBA impose strict operating standards on their broker members, a lot of which are aimed to safeguard consumer’s interests. The following are necessities for a company to become a BIBA member. 1. They must be members of GISC (General Insurance Standards Council) which at the time of writing regulates the sale of general insurance in the UK . 2. BIBA members are independent so will be able to advise and recommend products to you from the entire market. 3. All members will put the customer first ahead of all other parties including insurance companies. This effectively means that they will be on your side throughout and will argue the case for you should the need arise. 4. The solvency regulation and monetary control of BIBA, on its members, ensures that your financial interests are secure.

If you have an hour to spare we recommend you check out the BIBA website. It is packed with useful information providing advice on car insurance, home & contents and travel insurance. It also contains a really useful “jargon buster” section which translates all that terminology used in the general insurance, into language that we can all understand!

If you have decided that you would like to use a BIBA registered insurance broker to arrange your car insurance, then this site will also enable you to search for your nearest broker, by selecting the town/area you live in and the sort of insurance that you are looking to arrange.

BIBA was formed in 1977 to represent independent insurance brokers, but in 1988 began to allow Independent Financial Advisers into it’s membership. As such, it changed it’s name to the British Insurance and Investment Brokers’ Association (BIIBA) as it was know up until September 1999 when it reverted back to BIBA – having been instrumental in the formulation of a sister organization called the IFA Association.
