Is it right to always look for the cheapest car insurance?

It is human nature for most people to hunt out the cheapest deal whenever one is searching for a product or service and car insurance is no different. In fact, it would probably be fair to say that people will always look for the cheapest car insurance quotes, even if they are not usually the bargaining or bartering type. Why? Because car insurance is a distress purchase, let’s face it who likes buying car insurance?

Nobody has a choice whether they wish to buy car insurance, it is a compulsory purchase in the UK and the only way of ensuring that uk citizens can drive on the uk roads, fully protected for third party liabilities. It is this aspect of an insurance policy that is the most important, but we will come back to this a little later.

So, yes shop around, try and find the cheapest deal, after all that’s one of the beauties of the Internet, but always try to consider a few other things, other than just the price. For example, does the policy carry an excess and if so how much? This is the amount of money you would have to pay in the event of a claim on your insurance policy. Do I have to pay extra for a green card or for any ongoing customer service? Some companies will charge you administration fees for this sort of thing, so it may be worth bearing in mind whether you do usually require such service. What sort of customer service do the company provide? Do they have any testimonials from satisfied customers or maybe somebody you know might have had experience of their service.

These are just a few things that should be taken into consideration rather than purely looking for the cheapest car insurance policy. Choosing one provider to save £20, to end up paying an extra £40 in administration fees because you change your car or add a driver to your policy during the year is a realistic possibility, so it pay’s to approach things with a broader mind, whilst still remaining focused on the cost of cover.

We mentioned third party liability earlier on this page. This essential part of all insurance policies basically insures you against any damage you may cause to any other person and or property. It is this cover that exposes insurance companies to the greatest risk due to it being an unknown quantity that can produce enormous liabilities. For example, personal injury claims costs can be unlimited, whereas a repair to a car, or even the replacement of one, has a capped cost liability.
